Close your eyes and imagine the stereotypical spare-no-expense ‘dream home’. You thought of the Playboy Mansion, right?
Well, prepare to change your mind. That’s because uber-successful property developer John Boyd is living the dream … perched high atop a bank building.
Of course, a high rise luxury apartment spread across three storeys is nothing new – just think Donald Trump and his glitteringly golden Manhattan digs with sensational views of Central Park.
But you don’t have to look beyond Sydney to find what could just be the next best thing – and probably even better.
A decade ago, Boyd developed the 46-floor, $800 million ANZ Bank Centre on Castlereagh Street. Standing at a tad under 200 metres, it’s only the 10th tallest in the city and – while striking – it’s apparently no more than a normal office building.
But only one guy and his family have the keys to the 43rd floor – which is where the 2000 square metre penthouse magic begins.
The ANZ tower was developed by industry veteran Boyd over ten years, and he sold it in 2009. But ever the smart negotiator, he kept the amazing 3-storey penthouse – the only residence in the entire building – just for himself, his wife Marly and their toddler son. And it’s no surprise why.
If you know nothing else about Boyd, his apartment dutifully speaks 1000 words on his behalf.
Boyd’s incredible penthouse has 360 degree floor-to-ceiling views of Sydney Harbour and Hyde Park, a private 1-stop lift from the basement, and 200 items of custom-made art-deco furniture. From design to fitout, it took four years for interior architect Blainey North to complete.
Sydney-based North has done interiors for Nicole Kidman, Russel Crowe and Crown Casino, and she said she took on The Boyd Residence as “a giant art piece”.
She’s not kidding. The penthouse has the largest rug in the southern hemisphere, which had to be cut up to get up the express elevator and then sewn back together once upstairs. There’s a gym, cigar and conference rooms, resort style rooftop pool, cabana lounge and two terraces.
And you know what? You can start living the sky-mansion life right now by snapping up this gem … as long as you have a cool $66 million in the bank.
That’s right: The Boyd Residence is on the market.
The marketing material says it’s “certainly the best penthouse ever offered in Australia, if not the world” – and we think they could even be underselling it. Indeed, it won the Finest Residence award at last year’s International Design & Architecture Awards in 2017.
“Its many grand entertaining spaces are of a scale which has to be seen to be believed, framed by soaring double-height ceilings and dramatic walls of glass,” LJ Hooker agent Bill Malouf said.
And if it gets the $66 million that Boyd is seeking (which equates to $33,000 per square metre, just in case you’re counting), it will set a new record – smashing James Packer’s amazing One Barangaroo development by $6 million even before it’s built.
But whatever price it gets, this amazing Batman-inspired penthouse sets a new standard for Australian apartment living. And it may now fire the imagination of those who also aspire to the apartment high life. Just start putting those pennies in the piggy bank.
